LOS ANGELES – Over in the Golden State, Arizona State senior Kelley Anderson split a pair of matches in her first day of competition at the Riviera ITA All-American Championships in Los Angeles.
Anderson opened the day against Maria Kononova of North Texas. She fell 3-6, 3-6 in the morning session to a woman ranked No. 41 in the preseason ITA rankings.
"It was a tough one for Kelley this morning," Associate head coach Matt Langley said. "She was excited and prepared for the tournament, but unfortunately didn't play her best. She had a couple of opportunities to gain leads there in the second set and get some momentum going her way, but wasn't able to string enough quality points together."
She regrouped and won her afternoon matchup with No. 46 Emma Davis of Wake Forest in three sets.
"I'm proud of the way she handled the setback, though, and how she responded positively this afternoon by getting the win over Wake Forest," Langley said. "Overall, she's doing a better job of understanding how to construct points and play a game style that is going to hold her in good stead for the future."
Anderson jumped out to a quick lead when she took the first set 6-3. The junior Demon Deacon came back to take the second set from Anderson 1-6, but in the third set Anderson took a 4-2 lead before Davis had to retire.
The Sun Devil senior's All-American Championship run continues Wednesday morning at 11:30 a.m. PT.
