FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- The Arizona State volleyball team (5-2) cruised a to a straight-set, 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-21) victory over Cal State Bakersfield Friday morning, to open play at the 2017 Lumberjack Classic.
With the win, the Sun Devils improve to 5-2 on the 2017 campaign and 2-2 in neutral site matches.
Once again pacing the Sun Devil attack was senior Oluoma Okaro, who signed off on a highly efficient outing of 18 kills (.394 - 18/5/33), seven digs and three service aces. The Lakewood, Calif. native has now recorded double-figure kills tallies in each of the Arizona State's seven matches on the season, and boasts a team-best season kills per set average of 4.8.
Joining Okaro in what proved to be a balanced Sun Devil attack, was freshman Griere Hughes who tallied 10 kills in the outing. The Sun Devil newcomer who entered the weekend ranked 10th in the Pac-12 Conference in kills per set (3.25) , has now surpassed the double-figure kills mark in four consecutive outings.
Also making contributions on the offensive end were Ivana Jeremic and Peyton Grahovac, who each notched kills tallies of five. Jeremic a steady force for the Maroon and Gold on the season also posted 11 digs, while Grahovac's .500 hitting percentage qualified as a team-best.
Making her first start on the season, was sophomore, setter Nicole Peterson who recorded 33 assists, while adding nine digs. Proving in the early going to be a well-rounded postilion group on the Arizona State roster, three Sun Devil setters have now made starts on the season, including the aforementioned Peterson, freshman, Shelbie Dobmeier, and sophomore, Callie Jones.
Of pertinent historical note, senior, libero Halle Harker's team-best 12-dig effort pushed her career tally to 1,541. She now sits 56 digs shy of Christy Nore's third-place mark of 1,597.
