Led by sophomore Blake Wagoner's 2-under 70, the @SunDevilMGolf squad sits tied for second at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate held at Desert Forest Golf Club in Carefree.

Wagoner had five birdies, including four in his first nine holes and is tied for third just two shots back. Freshman Mason Andersen shot 72 and is tied for 11th.

Kent State leads the way with a 7-under 281 led by Gisli Sveinbergsson who shot a 4-under 68 which included nine birdies.

ASU shot 1-under on the par-3 holes and had 19 birdies, second-best on the day to Kent State's 23, but shot 15-over on the par-4 holes which kept it from taking the lead after the first day.

The teams will play 18 holes on Saturday and Sunday at the par-72 and 7,203-yard course, as the tournament is being hosted by Georgia State.

LAST TIME OUT: ASU had their first tournament of the year last week in Minnesota at the Gopher Invitational. The team finished sevent, but had some promising play especially from sophomore Alex del Rey, who finished fourth overall, shooting 5-under under, including a 4-under 67 in the second round. Freshman Mason Anderson also showed what he is capable of, after a tough first round the freshman finished solid with a pair of 72s on the final two days.

THE FIELD: Georgia State, Arizona State (No. 21), Nebraska, Rice, Georgia Tech, LSU (7), Kent State (No. 23), Augusta, Gonzaga, Minnesota, Hawai'i, Kansas, Houston and Lipscomb make up the field.

SMART GUY NOTES: Senior Ryan Douglass (Interdisciplinary Studies, Sr./3.43), senior Tobias Eden (Interdisciplinary Studies/3.16), Anthony Truong (Business-Sport and Media Studies/3.78) and Blake Wagoner (Business-Global Politics/3.67) all have grade point averages worth noting.

NEXT UP: ASU will compete in the Paintbrush Intercollegiate Oct. 9-10 in Erie, Colo., hosted by the University of Denver.
