ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Arizona State volleyball team (8-2) opened play at the 2017 Maverick Classic with a straight-set, 3-0 (25-19. 25-23, 25-18) win over Lamar (1-7), Friday afternoon at UT Arlington's College Park Center.
By virtue of the victory, the Sun Devils improve to 8-2 on the season and move out to a four-match winning streak.
Senior outside hitter Oluoma Okaro spearheaded a balanced Sun Devil offensive attack, recording 15 kills while also adding five digs in the effort. The Lakewood, Calif. native who entered the match with a kills per set average of 4.78 to her credit, marking the third-best tally in the conference and the 13th-best in the country, has now exceeded double-digit kills totals in each of the Sun Devils 10 outings on the season.
Joining Okaro in tallying double-figure kills on the match was freshman Griere Hughes, who signed off on an efficient 13-kill, .400-hitting outing.
Also making contributions to Arizona State's well-rounded match on the attack were Carmen Unzue (seven kills (.545-7/1/11)), Ivana Jeremic (seven kills. eight digs) and Peyton Grahovac (six kills (.556-6/1/9)).
Pacing the the Maroon and Gold defensively, senior libero Halle Harker posted 18 digs. Of pertinent historical note, the tally moves Harker's career digs total to 1,590, placing her just seven digs shy of Christy Nore's third-place mark of 1,597. Harker enters the weekend with a digs per set average of 5.28 on the season, marking the second-best in the Pac-12 Conference and 30th best in the NCAA.

Slow to catch their stride in the early going, the Sun Devils managed to overcome brief deficits in sets one and two, earning victories of 25-19 and 25-23 respectively, before capping the outing with a 25-18 third set win.
