TEMPE, Ariz. – For Arizona State and Boston University, 110 minutes of soccer wasn't enough to break a scoreless draw on Friday night at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.

A stout defensive effort from both sides ultimately led to the 0-0 scoreline and the first Sun Devil draw of the season.

"The game started where we completely controlled the match and played good soccer," said head coach Graham Winkworth. "Unfortunately we didn't take advantage of that but I thought we created enough chances to win the match."

Starting her first home-match in the maroon and gold, freshman Nikki Panas kept a clean sheet and recorded three saves for Arizona State (1-1-1). The latter two of those came in the second half, keeping the tight match all square heading into the overtime period.

"Making your home debut is always nerve-wracking but she was very solid," Winkworth said when asked about his keeper. She wasn't tested too often but did make a couple of great saves on some high balls."

The Sun Devils peppered the Terrier (1-3-1) defense with 10 shots in a strong opening 45 minutes, five of which were on goal. No one was able to find the back of the net, however, and when the game remained scoreless after the second half, Arizona State went to its third overtime in as many matches to start the season.

With a game time temperature of 109 degrees and an extra 20 minutes of play after regulation, conditioning remained of paramount importance for the Sun Devils.

"We have fitness tests we have to pass throughout the year that help us," said sophomore Devyn Kesley when asked about the team's training routine. "That's still a long time to be running around on the field, so I was really proud of our team."

Arizona State had one last look late at a golden goal, but forward Christina Edwards' shot went wide with just 15 seconds remaining. The scoreless draw was the program's first since October 12, 2014, when Arizona State battled Washington State to a 0-0 tie in Pullman.

Edwards and midfielder Jemma Purfield led the way with three shots each in the draw, while a trio of other Sun Devils added two shots a piece.

The team now turns its focus to the final match of the Sun Devil Desert Classic, coming on Sunday afternoon against No. 24 UCF.

"They're one of the best teams in the country," Winkworth said. "We're going to have to limit their opportunities like we did out there tonight."

Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium and the match will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
