NEW YORK – Former Sun Devil Jacqueline Cako advanced to the second round of U.S. Open qualifying rounds when she defeated the No. 2 seed and world No. 105 Maryna Zanevska, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, Wednesday in New York.

"We're really happy for Jacqueline," Arizona State women's tennis head coach Sheila McInerney said. "She's always had a dream of playing in the U.S. Open and now she's one step closer to realizing that dream."

Cako dropped the first set as the two-seed Zanevska of Belgium got out to a fast start, but Cako settled down and won the final two sets to take the match.

With the win, the Brier, Washington, native advances to the second round of qualifying to take on Anna Zaja of Germany, Thursday, who won her opening round match in straight sets.

Zaja entered the qualifying tournament ranked 230th in the world, while the USA's Cako sits at 220.

Cako graduated from ASU in 2013 with a degree in biosciences. While a Sun Devil, Cako was a staple at NCAA Championships as she earned three straight trips to the Sweet 16 as an individual.
