TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State senior defensive lineman Tashon Smallwood has been named to the watch list for the prestigious Wuerffel Award, presented by the All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
Known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service", the award is named for 1996 Heisman Trophy Award winner Danny Wuerffel. Presented since 2005, past winners include Texas linebacker Sam Acho (2010) and Heisman Trophy winning Florida quarterback Tim Tebow (2008).
Smallwood was among the team leaders in 2016 in tackles for loss with nine for a total of 28 yards. He has 23 tackles for loss over three seasons in an ASU uniform, and his 43 total tackles as a sophomore led Sun Devil defensive linemen in 2015.
The Wuerffel Award is the second community service award Smallwood is eligible to receive this season. Earlier this week, Smallwood was named among the nominees for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
A portion of Smalwood's community involvement includes working with the Tempe Boys and Girls Club. Tashon also has participated in a Missions Trip to San Diego. He also volunteers with New Leaf Women's and Children's Shelter, offering assistance in a variety of areas, and with the Save A Life Foundation, helping to uplift the spirits of cancer patients.
The 2017 Wuerffel Award recipient will be formally announced at the National Football Foundation's Press Conference in New York City on December 5, 2017, and formally presented at the All Sports Association's 49th Annual Awards Dinner on February 16, 2018.
