TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devil men's hockey team made another roster move for the 2017-18 season, bringing in forward Gage Mackie a year early.
Along with Mackie, head coach Greg Powers announced the additions of transfer forward Andrew Taverner and incoming freshman goaltender Michael DePhillips. Taverner will not be eligible until the 2018-19 season.
"Gage has been committed to ASU for a couple of years now and we are really pleased with his development," said Powers. "We had a spot open up and instead of bringing in someone that was currently uncommitted, it just made more sense to bring in Gage a year earlier. His character and work ethic will be a welcomed addition to our locker-room after a very successful year serving as the captain in Aberdeen."
At 6-foot-3, 185-pounds, Mackie comes in after totaling 14 goals and 21 assists in 50 games with the Aberdeen Wings in the NAHL. The Anchorage, Alaska-native officially committed in 2015 as the youngest to commit to ASU, and was ranked No. 178 in the North American rankings prior to the 2015 NHL Draft.
Mackie was awarded the NAHL's Leadership Award and the Aberdeen Wing's Heart Award this season, which is given to the player who gives his heart and soul each and every day on and off the ice.
Taverner arrives in Tempe after spending the last three seasons with Quinnipiac, which included an appearance at the 2016 NCAA Championships. During his three years, he totaled 15 goals and 17 assists in 93 games for the Bobcats. The Edmonton, Alberta-native won't be unfamiliar with all his Sun Devil teammates, as he shared ice time with Riley Simpson in Minor Midget's in Edmonton from 2010-11.
With the departure of senior netminder Robert Levin to graduation, DePhillips comes in as the Devils' third goaltender. He spent a majority of the 2016-17 season with the PAL Jr. Islanders in the USPHL Premier league – the same league as Austin Lemieux. At 5-foot-11, 180-pounds, the Summit, New Jersey-native held a 8-8-1 record, a 3.46 goals against average, and .916 save percentage in 21 games. In 2015-16, DePhillips made the USNTDP Junior National Team.
All three will be eligible and ready to suit up for the Devils in 2017-18.
