NEW ORLEANS, La. – Redshirt junior Maggie Ewen has been named the Women's National Field Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor season. She becomes the first Sun Devil female to win the award since Jacquelyn Johnson in 2008, and first ASU thrower since Ryan Whiting in 2010.
At the NCAA Outdoor Championships this past weekend, Ewen totaled a meet-high 21 points behind her first championship in the hammer throw, a second-place finish in the discus, and sixth in the shot put. Her winning hammer throw of 73.32m (240-7) broke the 10-year NCAA record.
Earlier in the season, the St. Francis, Minnesota-native broke the American collegiate and Pac-12 record on two different occasions before ultimately setting the new collegiate record. She now owns the first, third and fourth best marks in the collegiate hammer throw history books.
The redshirt junior became just the second Pac-12 female thrower to win three throwing titles in the same championship meet, as she won the hammer, discus and shot put at the Pac-12 Championships in May.
This becomes the fourth award for The Bowerman finalist this season, as she was also named the USTFCCCA West Region Female Field Athlete of the Year, Pac-12 Female Field Athlete of the Year and Pac-12 Championship Female Athlete of the Meet.
She will compete next week at the USATF Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, Calif.
