EUGENE, Ore. – The Arizona State women's track and field team, led by redshirt junior Maggie Ewen, finished 10th at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Tracktown USA in Eugene, Ore. The finish is the highest by the women since 2013, and the second-highest point total (21) at the meet since the third-place, 41-point finish in 2009. Ewen also scored the most individual points of any student-athlete at the NCAA Championships.
After capturing the hammer throw national championship and a sixth-place finish in the shot put on Thursday, Ewen bounced back on Saturday as the runner-up in the discus throw. Her final throw flew 60.11m (197-2), which would have been the best throw in the event if not for a 61-plus meter toss by Kansas State's Shadae Lawrence on her final attempt just prior to Ewen.
The Bowerman candidate becomes the first ASU female thrower to earn three First-Team All-American honors in the outdoor championship meet since Sarah Stevens in 2009, who also did the same in 2008. Overall, she joins a very prestigious class of Sun Devils to do so in program history, including Stevens and former NCAA champion Jessica Pressley.
"It's an awesome accomplishment," said Ewen. "Sarah [Stevens] and Jessica [Pressley] are always the people I heard about when I came to ASU. Their pictures are up everywhere, and to think I've done something that they've done and join their company is crazy to me. It doesn't seem real, but it's an awesome feeling.
"I'm super happy with how everything went. Hammer was the big thing, I wanted to do better in the shot put but know it's something I can continue to work on, and was incredibly happy with how the discus turned out. Overall, it was a great weekend."
Ewen's 21 total points scored on her own also ranks atop some of the top overall performances by a Sun Devil at the NCAA Championships. In 2009, Stevens totaled 22 between the hammer, shot put and discus.
As an individual, the St. Francis, Minnesota-native put the Devils ahead of 67 other teams.
Also in the field events was senior Keyasia Tibbs in the triple jump. For the second-straight year, Tibbs earned Second-Team All-American honors with a 13th-place finish and a best jump of 13.12m (43-0.50). In 2016, Tibbs finished 14th in the event with a best of 12.93m (42-5.25).
