CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – Arizona State women's golf head coach Missy Farr-Kaye has been named 2016-17 Golf Pride Grips WGCA West Region Coach of the Year, as announced by the association Wednesday.
Farr-Kaye led the Sun Devils to the storied program's eighth NCAA national championship last week while senior Monica Vaughn became the sixth Sun Devil to earn NCAA individual medalist honors, both nation-leading marks.
"I am honored to accept this award as the West Region Coach of the Year beside two coaches that I highly respect in Coach Glaser and Coach Fletcher," said Missy Farr-Kaye. "I share this award with my assistant coach Michelle Estill and volunteer assistant coach Matt Trimble, but most especially with every member of the Arizona State women's golf team this year. Coaching this group of special young women has been my great honor this year."
Completing a trifecta at Arizona State, Farr-Kaye has now won a national title as a player on ASU's first championship team (1990) under legendary head coach Linda Vollstedt, as an assistant under then-head coach Melissa Luellen (2009), and now as a head coach (2017).
Florida's Emily Bastel Glaser was named East Region Coach of the Year while Northwestern's Emily Fletcher earned Central Region honors, coaches of two of the three teams the Sun Devils defeated in match play en route to the national title.
Under Farr-Kaye's leadership, the team earned nine top-five finishes in stroke play this season, including five tournament victories – Pac-12 Preview, Clover Cup, PING/ASU Invitational, and NCAA Regionals. This season also marked the first Regionals win for ASU since 2009.
At the NCAA championships, the Sun Devils qualified for match play behind individual champion Vaughn before completing the first sweep in NCAA championships match play history in the quarterfinals vs. Florida. After a come-from-behind semifinal win vs. Stanford, ASU held off the local team in Northwestern en route to a title.
The award is determined by a vote of the Division I Awards Committee after reviewing the 10 highest ranked coaches in each region and their teams' respective records. The top three from each region will be considered by the Committee for WGCA National Coach of the Year honors.
The WGCA National Coach of the Year will be announced on Tuesday, June 6 on Golf Channel's Morning Drive (7-9 am ET/4-6 am PT).
