SUGAR GROVE, Illinois – The No. 23 Arizona State men's golf team sits positioned in 21st place after two rounds of play at the 2017 NCAA Championships, held at the par-72, 7,300-yard Rich Harvest Farms.
Collecting a cumulative five-over, 293 the Sun Devils remain in contention to advance in Sunday's looming 15-team cut.
"We have fought hard and battled, but just have not played great these first two days," said head coach Matt Thurmond. "We have had a lot of big misses on key shots. Our competitiveness has kept us in range of doing something and we hope that tomorrow we can play like we are capable. If we can get some rhythm and confidence going, a good round can happen. We expected the course to be tougher and we are adjusting as needed. There are a lot of birdies out there with a handful of tough shots. We need to execute those tough. I am ultimately confident that we got this."
Continuing to pace Arizona State on the individual leader board, freshman Chun An Yu posted a one-over, 73. At two-under for the tournament An Yu is positioned in a tie for 28th and six strokes back of second round leader Scottie Sheffler of the University of Texas.
Posting a pair of gritty performances, senior Jared du Toit and freshman Alejandro Del Rey Gonzalez maintained their respective tournament tallies each notching rounds of even-par, 72.
Sitting at two-over thru 14, du Toit finished his round in impressive fashion, capping the day with a two-under four-hole stretch.
In a similar fashion, Gonzalez finished his round strong, bouncing back from a bogey on 8th with a birdie on the par-4, 9th.
Gonzalez and du Toit currently sit positioned in a tie for 62nd.
The Sun Devils will look to advance in tomorrow's 54-hole, 15-team cut and are slated to tee off beginning at 11:45 a.m. CST once again alongside No. 25 Pepperdine and No. 24 Florida State.
