SUGAR GROVE, Illinois – The @ASUMensGolf team was out on the course at the crack of dawn on Friday at the NCAA Men's Golf Championships held at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois. Arizona State is currently tied for 17th with Pac-12 affiliate Stanford and 10 strokes back of first round leader Vanderbilt. The Sun Devils, the only team with three freshman featured on their roster at the championships, collectively signed off on a 2-over 290 led by freshman Chun An Yu.
An Yu carded a 3-under 69 good enough to place him in a tie for seventh and just two shots off the individual lead.
After making the turn at even-par, Yu capped the round in impressive fashion posting consecutive birdies on hole 12 and 13 before notching on an eagle on the par-5 No. 18.
Senior captain Jared du Toit recovered after a shaky start to his round, concluding the day to the tune of back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18. At one-over, 73 du Toit currently sits in a tie for 62nd.
Also firing a one-over, 73 was freshman Alex Del Rey Gonzalez who sits positioned alongside du Toit on the leaderboard.
Rounding out the Sun Devil lineup freshman Blake Wagoner concluded the round with a 3-over 75 to his credit while sophomore Jino Sohn posted a 4-over 76. With play suspended at 8 p.m. CT due to darkness and weather delays, 15 teams are slated to conclude their opening rounds tomorrow morning beginning at 6:30 a.m. CT.
Second round action is slated to ensue at 7:15 a.m. CT. The Maroon and Gold will once again tee it up alongside No. 25 Pepperdine and No. 24 Florida State beginning at 12:57 p.m. CT.
