ATHENS, Ga. -- Senior Kassidy Jump begins her run in the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Tournament on Wednesday, and the Sun Devil will face Texas Tech's Felicity Maltby at 3:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. PT.
Jump enters her first-ever NCAA Singles Tournament ranked at No. 50, and her opponent, Maltby, enters at No. 58.
"She's excited and it's a goal for all the kids," said head coach Sheila McInerney. "You want to get to the final site as a team and as an individual. You aspire to get into it as a single or in doubles. It's a really tough tournament with the best 64 players in the country, so there's no easy rounds. She was disappointed we didn't advance as a team, so she's using that as motivation to play well in Athens."
When the Devils faced the Red Raiders earlier this season, Jump's doubles teammate Sammi Hampton faced Maltby on court two. Hampton won that match in three sets, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. Jump went toe-to-toe with Maltby's teammate, Gabriela Talaba, and fell in three sets.
The 2016-17 season is the first year Jump has represented the Devils on court one, and played some of the nation's best. Jump has faced four top-10 players – three of which earned automatic bids – this season, and a total of 21 ranked players out of her 32 total matches.
In her most recent ranked match-ups, Jump upset then-No. 23 Gabby Smith and No. 37 Jessica Failla of USC in the matter of two weeks.
