SUGAR GROVE, Illinois – After a day hiatus, the No. 7 Sun Devils returned to the course as the 24-team field completed a delayed round two of the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships.
Following the entire round of competition, ASU sits in a tie for ninth place, just one stroke out of the top eight, the cutoff needed to advance to match play following Monday's round three.
"We made some mental errors today and we're better than that," said head coach Missy Farr-Kaye. "We've got to clean those up tomorrow if we want to make match play. I saw some great play from every single player and I saw some mistakes we need to fix."
Individually, senior Monica Vaughn remains near the top of the leaderboard, now in a tie for third and just two strokes out of the top spot. She shot the third-lowest round of the day (72) amongst the 132-player field.
"I think I just need to keep doing what I'm doing," said Vaughn. "I've had a good attitude and [know I can only] control what I can. [I had] a couple missed putts out there, and I'll work on that, but I'm hitting the ball great. I'm doing everything I know how, so [if I] just keep playing like I have been, I think I'll have a good chance."
"I'm just so excited for her," Farr-Kaye said of Vaughn. "I walked the last five holes with her and every one, she had a birdie putt just miss. She's right there, close to making some more birdies. She's just playing beautiful golf, striking the ball beautifully, making great choices and I'm just saying 'Yep, yep go'. It's a lot of fun to watch her play so well."
Just two strokes separate the Devils and the two teams (USC, Miami) above them, coincidentally ASU's pairing partners for Monday, which will provide an important benchmark throughout the round.
"If we can adjust and make better choices when we're in trouble, I think we'll be just fine. I believe wholeheartedly in this team and I know what they're capable of; if we get even a fraction of what they're capable of tomorrow, we'll be just fine."
ASU, Miami, and USC tee off as part of the afternoon wave Monday, between 12:40 and 1:24 pm CT (10:40-11:24 am PT) on hole 10. Linnea Strom kicks things off (12:40) followed by Roberta Liti (12:51), Olivia Mehaffey (1:02), Sophia Zeeb (1:13), and Vaughn (1:24), teeing off every 11 minutes.
The Golf Channel broadcast also kicks off Monday, with pregame coverage set for 2-3 pm, live coverage from 3-7 pm, and post-match coverage from 7-8 pm, all times local (Central Time).
