SUGAR GROVE, Illinois – After an extremely chilly and rainy first day of competition at the 2017 NCAA Women's Golf Championships, during which the wind chill was in the mid to upper 30's, the No. 7 Sun Devils are currently in a four-way tie for third place.
"In my 15 years of coaching, today was in the top five for toughest conditions," said head coach Missy Farr-Kaye. "We talked all year about and trained at being mentally strong and we really were able to put that into practice today. We left some shots out there but I think we're in a pretty good position right now."
No. 12 Northwestern (+13) and No. 14 Kent State (+15) are in first and second place thus far with No. 1 Stanford, No. 17 Baylor, and No. 25 Ohio State part of a tie for third with Arizona State.
Individually, senior Monica Vaughn is in a tie for fifth place (74/+2) after earning the top spot at NCAA Regionals last week.
"I'm so happy to see [Monica] be a leader in her final tournaments as a Sun Devil, and to be someone for everyone to look up to. She's very used to this weather growing up in Oregon and it's fun to watch her really be our leader."
In her first NCAA Championship appearance, freshman Olivia Mehaffey ended the day on a high note, birdieing hole 18.
"We'll eat, get everything dry, go to bed, get up and do it all over again. That's the rigors of the National Championships – it's not for the faint of heart and it's meant to be difficult. It's a marathon; it's not a sprint. Part of our training has been in preparation for these types of conditions and Michelle [Estill] and I are proud of our team today."
The Sun Devils have a short turnaround between rounds one and two, just about 12 hours from the finish of the first to the start of the second, teeing off Saturday morning between 7:30-8:14 am CT (5:30-6:14 am PT).
Once again, ASU will be paired with Florida State and USC. Following round two, pairings will be done based on current standings before the first round of cuts following round three.
