CORVALLIS, Ore. – While the team will not compete in the Pac-12 Track & Field Championships until May 13-14, Sun Devil redshirt sophomore Liam Henshaw travels to Oregon State to start competition in the men's decathlon on Saturday, May 6 at the Whyte Track and Field Center.
Henshaw, a transfer from the University of Oregon, will compete in his first-ever Pac-12 Championships and holds the advantage of competing close to home as a native of Eugene -- just over 40 miles away.
"The decathlon is very funny and the initial forecast for the first day shows rain," said head coach Greg Kraft. "Some people may have trouble with competing in those conditions. For Liam, like all of our athletes, it's about going there and doing what you've been doing all season -- not making the moment bigger than it is and knowing it starts with the 100-meter dash, then three long jumps and you just have to be able to navigate it.
"Somewhere along the way you're going to have a bad event. Some athletes overcome it and it stimulates them, or you see your competitor have a bad event and it motivates you. Liam has a pretty good history in the decathlon."
As far as the performance list goes, Henshaw ranks seventh in the field entering the two-day championship competition.
This season, Henshaw participated in one decathlon competition, finishing third at the Jim Click Shootout on April 5-6.
The 100-meter dash kicks off the events at 12 p.m. PT on Saturday.
