SATURDAY UPDATE:
Saturday's scheduled competition in the 58th annual Pac-12 Men's Golf Championships – the completion of the second round and the entire third round – was cancelled due to overnight snow making the conditions at Boulder Country Club unplayable.
Play had been suspended due to darkness on Friday with 12 players still on the course. They were set to finish their round Saturday morning ahead of the start of the third round, but that never materialized after up to five inches of snow fell in the northeast Boulder area. Some of it melted off during the day when the sun came out, but with overnight temperatures dipping into the mid-20s and not warming much above 30 during the day, the snow was slow to disappear.
Tournament officials and BCC staff met throughout Saturday with an eye on Sunday's forecast, and the goal is to complete 54 holes (thus shortening from the scheduled 72). The earliest start for the completion of the second round will be 10 a.m. MDT, with the third round to follow (with a shotgun start). The starting time is fluid depending on the course conditions, but the forecast is calling for a break in the precipitation and temperatures to climb into the low 50s.
For the championship to be official, at least 36 holes must be completed.
FRIDAY RECAP: It has been awhile since the Sun Devil men's golf program battled snow and hail in late April, but that is what happened Friday at the 58th annual Pac-12 Championships at Boulder Country Club. ASU couldn't finish its second round, as three players will pick up play Saturday if the weather cooperates.
Both Jared du Toit and Blake Wagoner are currently tied for tenth, as ASU is in eighth place but just five strokes off fourth, despite leading the tournament with 31 birdies.
Play was delayed by 30 minutes due to light frost on most of the greens early. Cloud cover developed, and there was wind, rain and light snow at various times throughout the day. Play was suspended at 1:51 p.m. for what amounted to 32 minutes as officials ruled there were non-dangerous conditions at the time – light but blowing snow, which was sticking to the greens when it fell.
The 72 players returned to the course where 60 would eventually finish but four groups had between one and four holes to wrap up when play was suspended due to darkness as well as light snow again accumulating on the greens. The completion of the second round is on Saturday's schedule first, commencing at 10 a.m.; the third round will then get underway at Noon. Both are weather permitting, as snow and fog are in the forecast, with the temperatures not expected to climb above freezing. But if tournament officials deem the course conditions worthy of play, the championships will go on.
SUN DEVILS WITH TWO ROUNDS COMPLETED
Blake Wagoner, 77-68—145
Jino Sohn, 73-77—150
Tobias Eden, 73-80—153
SUN DEVILS WITH HOLES REMAINING IN SECOND ROUND
Jared du Toit 70-(+5)—(+5; four holes remaining)
Chun An Yu, 71-(+5—(+6; one hole remaining)
Alejandro Del Rey Gonzalez, 75-(+9)—(+14; two holes remaining)
