TEMPE, Ariz. – For the second time this season, redshirt junior Maggie Ewen broke the American collegiate record in the women's hammer throw, this time reaching 72.81m (238-10.50) on the first day of the 2017 Duel in the Desert at Sun Angel Stadium.
On her second attempt on Friday afternoon, Ewen broke the record she set at the Baldy Castillo Invitational of 72.71m (238-06) as well as breaking the collegiate dual meet record set by DeAnna Price in 2016. For the first time this season, however, Ewen stayed consistently over 70 meters, hitting 71.53 and 71.44 on her fourth and fifth throws, respectively.
The mark continues to sit atop the national leaderboards by a whopping 15 feet.
Her teammate, redshirt freshman Kaylee Antill, also flexed her muscles. For the first time in her collegiate career, Antill eclipsed 60 meters, hitting 60.45m (198-3.75) for a seven-foot personal best. The mark ranks as the sixth-best throw in the Pac-12 so far this season and the 23rd nationally entering the weekend.
The two finished first and second in the event, giving ASU an 8-3 advantage on the women's side.
In the men's hammer throw, senior Kyle Long blew away his previous personal best as well with a toss of 67.27m (220-08). That mark currently ranks sixth in the NCAA West Region and 20th nationally entering the weekend.
Redshirt freshman Michael Titherington also threw for a new collegiate best at 55.75m (182-10.75) – a five-foot improvement.
The duo finished first and third for the men, giving the Devils a 7-4 advantage through one event.
The Duel in the Desert between ASU and Arizona will continue on Saturday, with the men's discus beginning at 4:30 p.m. PT. Running events begin at 6 p.m. with the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
