Williams is on a Major League Opening Day rosters for the first time in his career.
The 108 players ASU has sent to the Major Leagues is the most of any school since 1959, the year baseball's modern era started at ASU. ASU has had at least one major league player on their varsity roster from 1961 through 2013, which is the longest current streak in the nation, and 32 ASU baseball players have made their MLB debuts since 2002.
Sun Devil Baseball has a long and storied tradition of producing MLB players across the past six-plus decades, including an NCAA-best 414 Sun Devils who have been drafted, a combined 25 World Series appearances and 57 All-Star Games, nine MVP awards, four Rookie of the Year's, 17 Gold Gloves, 17 Silver Sluggers and two World Series MVP honors.
Austin Barnes
Staring in his second-consecutive Opening Day roster, Barnes – still considered a rookie – played in 21 games last season for the Dodgers, ending the season slashing .156/.270/.188. He saw time behind the plate and at second base while also making pinch hit appearances, although he is expected to primarily backup starting catcher Yasmani Grandal in 2017.
Tony Barnette
After spending six years with the Yakult Swallows of the Japan Central League, Barnette signed a two-year deal with the Texas Rangers through the 2017 season. The righty burst onto the scene last season after a rough debut, never allowing more than three earned runs in a single month en route to a 2.09 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 53 appearances.
Jake Barrett
After making his major league debut last April, the righty appeared in 68 games last season for the Diamondbacks, notching four saves in 59 1/3 innings with a 3.49 ERA. Barrett will begin the 2017 season on the 10-Day Disabled List with a shoulder injury, however, it is not believed to be serious.
Kole Calhoun
Calhoun and the Angels agreed to a new contract in the off-season, continuing his gig as their starting right fielder for at least another three years. The left-handed hitter had a solid season last year in Anaheim, hitting .271 with 18 home runs and 75 RBI.
Andre Ethier
Starting his second-consecutive Opening Day on the DL, Ethier has struggled with injury as of late. The outfielder fractured his right tibia in April of last season and was only activated in September. He took 24 at-bats in 2016, knocking five hits, a home run and two RBI. Ethier currently sits on the 10-Day Disabled List with a herniated disk in his back and has no timetable for return.
Ian Kinsler
A member of the world champion team U.S.A, Kinsler had arguably one of his best seasons in his career in 2016, hitting .288/.348/.484 while hitting 28 home runs and knocking in 83 runs. Kinsler also had a busy off-season, as he played a pivotal role for Team U.S.A., manning second base and batting leadoff. On Detroit's Opening Day just a few days ago, Kinsler sent a 1-0 pitch over the fence, becoming just the second player in Tigers' history to hit a bomb on two-straight Opening Days.
Jason Kipnis
Suffering from recurring right shoulder inflammation, Kipnis will begin the season on the 10-Day Disabled List with the same injury. The infielder spent two weeks on the DL in 2016 with the same injury, but returned just in time to lead Cleveland to their first World Series appearance in 19 years. Kipnis ended the season slashing .275/.343/.469 with a career-high 23 home runs and finished 6th in the American League in doubles with 41.
Mike Leake
Anchoring St. Louis' rotation as their fifth starter, Leake made 30 starts in 2016 totaling 176 2/3 innings of action. The righty managed a 4.69 ERA while striking out 125 batters.
Deven Marrero
Marrero was called up when the rosters expanded late last season, mostly appearing as a late-inning defense replacement. The infielder took 12 at-bats and notched one hit.
Dustin Pedroia
Alongside Kinsler, Pedroia, too, had one of his best seasons in 2016. The second baseman .318/.376/.449 on the season while notching 201 hits, just the second time in his career earning 200 or more hits. Pedroia also hit 36 doubles, good for 10th in the American League, 15 home runs, his best since 2012, and 74 RBI.
Andrew Romine
Playing alongside Kinsler for the third-consecutive season, Romine spent most of last season as a utility player, bouncing between the infield and even outfield, when necessary. The lefty-swinger slashed .236/.304/.322 in 108 games in 2016 with five doubles, two triples and two home runs.
Trevor Williams
Last season was a big one for Trevor Williams. Representing the Marlins in the Arizona Fall League in 2015, Williams was shortly traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates where he made his major league debut in September 2016. The heartwarming moment he shared with his father was posted by MLB on social media, and the righty appeared in seven games for the Pirates, making one start while striking out 11.
