Ann Arbor, Mich. -- The fifth-ranked Arizona State Water Polo team topped Pacific, 8-6, but fell to No. 7 Michigan, 7-6, on the opening day of play at the 2017 Wolverine Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan.
On the day, seven different Sun Devils found the back of the net, including Lena Mihailovic, who led all ASU scorers on the first day of play at the event with four goals.
Game One: ASU 8, Pacific 6
The Sun Devils started the day with an early matchup against No. 9 Pacific. ASU jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead with Mihailovic scoring in the first two minutes of play to put the Devils up 1-0.
The lead would not last long; however, as the Tigers would rattle off a pair of goals to take their first lead of the game, before Stephanie Contreras was able to even the score with a power play goal at the 2:29 mark of the second quarter, sending the game to halftime tied at two.
After trading goals early in the second half, the Sun Devils powered past Pacific with four unanswered goals to carry a 7-4 lead into the final quarter of play.
The Tigers battled back in the fourth, netting two goals of their own, but a Bente Rogge goal at the 5:30 mark gave the Sun Devils all the breathing room they would need, and closed out the 8-6 ASU victory.
Game Two: ASU 6, MICH 7
In their second meeting of the 2017 season, No. 5 ASU and No. 7 Michigan proved to be every bit as exciting as their first meeting just a week ago.
After trading goals in the first quarter, Michigan jumped ahead with a three-goal second, sending the game to halftime with the Wolverines working with a 4-1 lead.
After the short halftime break, defense again ruled the third quarter, with both teams finding just one goal in the period.
The action would come in the fourth, however, as a Kayla Cassas goal at the 3:54 mark started an onslaught of Sun Devil goals that eventually cut the Wolverine lead to just one with ten seconds left to play in the game.
Sadly, it would not be enough time as the Sun Devils would fall to the home side, 7-6, for just their third loss of the 2017 season.
ASU will be back in the pool tomorrow to close out the Invitational with a pair of games set to begin with a 9:30 a.m. (AZT) meeting with Santa Clara, to be followed by a 1 p.m. meeting with Bucknell.
