TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State gymnastics junior Nichelle Christopherson will compete as an individual event qualifier at the NCAA Regional meet on Saturday in Barnhill Arena on the campus of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark.
Christopherson will compete on beam and is an alternate on bars. The meet is slated for a 2 p.m. PT/4 p.m. CT start. Live stats and a live stream will be provided by the University of Arkansas.
A transfer from the University of Michigan, co-captain Christopherson made an exceptional mark in her first season as a Gym Devil. Competing on beam in ten of eleven meets for the Sun Devils, Christopherson most notably played a role in the team's 195.700-195.375 upset of then-No. 23 Arizona on March 5, posting a career high 39.150 in the all-around while earning the beam title with a season high 9.900. In seven of her ten outing on beam she recorded scores of 9.800 or higher.
Christopherson also hit six 9.8+ scores on bars in her eleven appearances on the event throughout the season, including a season high 9.875 which she hit twice.
Along with host Arkansas, No. 4 Utah, No. 9 Denver, No. 16 California, No. 21 Auburn, and Central Michigan will compete with full teams, while individuals from Illinois-Chicago, Southeast Missouri State, Northern Illinois, Texas Women's University, Illinois State and Lindenwood will send individual qualifiers.
The top two teams and top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in St. Louis, April 14-15, hosted by the University of Missouri, Columbia and the St. Louis Sports Commission.
In addition, event winners at each regional site will also advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or an all-around qualifier.
