TEMPE, Ariz. – On the less busy day of the Pac-12 vs. Big Ten Invitational, several Sun Devils made some noise at the Sun Angel Stadium on Friday.
Five Devils recorded a new personal best, while one broke the Pac-12 vs. Big Ten Invitational record.
Redshirt junior Maggie Ewen didn't throw a new collegiate record this week in the hammer throw, but did break the meet record by 27 feet with a throw of 71.72m (235-04). That mark would still rank as the best in the country, as no other thrower has eclipsed 70 meters yet this season.
In the men's hammer throw event, senior Kyle Long threw for a new personal best three separate times before tossing a 65.59m (215-02), which ranks sixth in the country. Long finished second in the field of 13.
His teammate, redshirt freshman Michael Titherington, also threw for a new personal best of 54.13m (177-07).
Sophomore Jessica Barreira also eclipsed her previous best in the women's javelin, hitting 44.09m (144-08) for a sixth-place finish.
On the track, two Devils placed first in the men's and women's 5,000-meter race – the only running event of the night. For the men, senior CJ Albertson clocked a 14:28.74 in what he treated as a practice run.
Freshman Megan Reniewicki won the men's race with a time of 17:29.90 in her first collegiate 5,000-meter event. Teammate Samantha Ortega got back on the track for the first time since the Texas A&M Aggie Invitational during the early portion of the indoor season.
Through three events, the Big Ten men currently lead the Pac-12 men, 74-33, while the Big Ten women boast a 67-47 lead.
The Devils will return to the track and field events tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. PT with the men's and women's discus throw. The track events begin at 6:15 p.m. PT with the men's 110-meter hurdles.
