TEMPE, Ariz. – There's no place like home for the Arizona State women's tennis team, as they returned to Whiteman Tennis Center for a 6-1 victory over No. 42 UNLV on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior Kassidy Jump – ranked No. 65 in the ITA singles rankings – upset No. 27 Carol Zi Yang of UNLV for her biggest victory of the season on court one, 7-6(3), 6-3.
"Overall it was a good win against a good team, and we knew they would be," said head coach Sheila McInerney. "They have a big win against a strong Arkansas team, so we had to be ready. Doubles was a little sluggish, which I think was due to having to create our own energy with a smaller than normal crowd on a weekday. We found enough to get that early point in our pocket and finish it in singles."
As McInerney eluded to, doubles fell behind early on court one with senior Alex Osborne and junior Nicole Fossa-Huergo getting down 4-1 early. The No. 58-ranked duo flipped the switch and rattled off five-straight points to clinch the doubles point.
Jump and sophomore Sammi Hampton sealed up the first doubles match on court three. They were also trailing at one point, as they started on a 3-0 run before surrendering four-straight to Paola Artiga and Anna Bogoslavets. Jump and Hampton finished it with a three-point stretch of their own.
In singles, Fossa-Huergo – who entered the match a little under the weather – appeared just fine based on her performance on court four. The Italian rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 match win over Bogoslavets for the first ASU victory.
After having her 14-match unbeaten streak snapped against No. 4 Stanford, junior Kelley Anderson got back to her winning ways on court three. She got out to a 4-0 lead in set one over En-Pei Huang, followed by a back-and-forth battle in set two. Anderson pulled away with a 6-3, 7-5 victory.
'The Grinder' Gussie O'Sullivan clinched the match with the fourth and deciding point on court six, rolling to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jovana Kenic.
The Devils now turn their attention to Friday as they host Big Sky contender Northern Arizona at 1:30 p.m. PT.
