TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 11 Arizona State beach volleyball team (6-4, 1-1 Pac-12) has a busy weekend ahead, starting with hosting the Nebraska Cornhuskers (3-6) on Thursday at 11 a.m. PT at the PERA Club.
Head coach Brad Keenan's squad will then hit the road, traveling to TCU for the 2017 Horned Frog Challenge Friday and Saturday. The Sun Devils will face the hosting Horned Frogs (7-3) and the No. 8 LSU Tigers (6-5) on Friday at 8 a.m. PT and 10:15 PT, respectively. They will finish the tournament facing LSU again on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. PT.
ABOUT NEBRASKA
The Nebraska beach volleyball team competed in Hawaii over the weekend for a multitude of matches. In the Outrigger Invitational on Queen's Beach in Honolulu. The Huskers lost to No. 7 Arizona (3-2) and got swept by No. 1 USC (5-0) and No. 5 Hawaii (5-0). The next day they came back to split their matches, sweeping Utah (5-0) before falling to No. 4 Florida State (1-4).
The Huskers swept Utah again, 5-0, Sunday prior to wrapping up its stay in Hawaii with a 4-1 loss to No. 5 Hawaii late Monday night.
ABOUT TCU
The TCU beach volleyball team competed in the Zuma Classic at Pepperdine over the weekend, knocking off the then-No. 10 Sun Devils, 3-2, in the first of three matches. The Horned Frogs followed the win with a 5-0 decision over Cal State Los Angeles before closing the day with a 5-0 loss to No. 2 Pepperdine.
ABOUT LSU
The No. 8 LSU beach volleyball team completed the sweep of the Tiger Beach Challenge, knocking off Florida International and North Florida by scores of 3-2 and 4-1 respectively. The previous day the Tigers knocked off Tulane and then-No. 10 South Carolina, 5-0 and 4-1.
LAST TIME OUT
The Sun Devils were on the road in California over the weekend, playing CSU Bakersfield Friday afternoon before competing in the Zuma Classic in Malibu on Saturday.
ASU notched its third consecutive win, defeating CSU Bakersfield, 5-0, in five straight set victories.
The Sun Devils posted a 1-2 record at the Zuma Classic, dropping duals with No. 2 Pepperdine (5-0) and TCU (3-2), before sweeping Cal State Los Angeles, 5-0, in the final match of the tournament.
THE REST OF THE 2017 CAMPAIGN
The Sun Devils will stay on the road for a three week stretch starting next weekend at the Florida International 5th Annual Surf & Turf Invitational in Miami, Fla. Then they will have a two-week stint in Southern California, facing Pac-12 foe USC on April 7, playing in the USAV Challenge on April 8, and then finishing with a double-header against Concordia and CSUN in Northridge, Calif. on April 14.
ASU will then wrap up its home slate, hosting three matches at the PERA Club against New Mexico and the California Bears on April 21, and the Stanford Cardinal on April 22.
The team will conclude the 2017 season at the Pac-12 Championship in Tucson, set for Thursday, April 27. The NCAA Beach Volleyball Championships follows on May 5-7 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
THE PERA CLUB
PERA, which stands for Project Employees Recreation Association is a private club for the employees and families of the Salt River Project.
The 83-acre club houses a social center, employee store, fitness center, swimming pool, game courts, and fields and offers children's programs, fitness classes, business meetings, sports leagues, and parties.
2017 RETURNERS
The Sun Devils return ten letter-winners in 2017, including the No. 1s duo of Bianca Arellano and Whitney Follette who were named to the inaugural All-Pac-12 First Team at the culmination of the 2016 season.
NEWCOMERS
The Sun Devils roster features a plethora of new faces in 2017. Newcomers include freshman Ellyson Lundberg(Larksupr, Calif.), freshman Katelyn Carballo (Laguna Beach, Calif.), freshman Kara Woodard (Phoenix, Ariz.), freshman Sage Patchell (Laguna Beach, Calif.), University of South Carolina transfer Katie Cross (Flagstaff, Ariz.), and indoor competitor Oluoma Okaro (Lakewood, Calif.).
