SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Pac-12 Conference announced the season's first track & field athletes of the week on Tuesday afternoon, and Sun Devil's Maggie Ewen and Chelsey Albertson swept the women's weekly awards for their performance at the Baldy Castillo Invitational.
Ewen, who was also named the USTFCCCA Women's Division I Athlete of the Week today, earned the conference's Field Athlete of the Week for her record-breaking performance in the hammer throw. It's her second honor in the last two seasons, as she was the last Sun Devil to earn the Field Athlete of the Week on March 29, 2016.
Albertson received the Track Athlete of the Week honor for her first-place finish in the 1,500-meter event, which currently ranks as the best time in the country. The senior is the first ASU female to earn the weekly honor since former NCAA champion and fellow distance runner Shelby Houlihan on March 30, 2015.
The redshirt-junior thrower set a new American collegiate record in the women's hammer throw with a mark of 72.71m (238-6) on Friday, March 17 at Sun Angel Stadium.
The throw broke two-time NCAA champion DeAnna Price's record of 72.66m (238-4) set in April of 2016.
Ewen had just broken the Pac-12 record less than a year ago with a throw of 70.50m (231-3) at the NCAA West Regional in May 2016.
She'll now turn her focus to the overall collegiate record held by former Georgia Bulldog Jenny Dahlgren (72.94m/239-3), which has stood for nearly 10 years.
The senior distance runner clocked a new personal best in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:20.24, which was a whole two seconds faster than the next best time in the country.
The time moves her into sixth all-time in the ASU record book in the event.
The Santa Clarita, California-native just missed the cut for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 5,000-meter with a season-best 16:03.47.
Albertson, Ewen and the rest of the Sun Devil track and field squad will compete again this weekend at the Pac-12 vs. Big Ten Challenge at Sun Angel Stadium.
