BERKELEY, Calif. – The Sun Devil women's tennis team suffered their first back-to-back shutout of the season on Saturday afternoon, as they fell to No. 12 Cal, 7-0, at Hellman Tennis Complex.

The Devils (7-5, 2-2) went toe-to-toe with two of the top-ranked teams in the Pac-12 over the weekend, but returned feeling like there was some play not left on the courts in Berkeley.

"Cal is always tough, particularly at home," said head coach Sheila McInerney. "But I felt we had a few opportunities that we did not capitalize on. Like yesterday against Stanford, we had our chances to win the doubles point, but just did not finish the job. I felt we started well in the singles matches but Cal just does not go away and makes nothing easy."

Again on court three, senior Kassidy Jump and sophomore Sammi Hampton gained some momentum for the Devils with a 6-2 win over Stephanie Lin and Alexis Nelson.

A back-and-forth battle on court one resulted in a victory for No. 65 Maya Jansen and Denise Starr of Cal over senior Alex Osborne and junior Nicole Fossa-Huergo, 7-5.

Like Friday, the doubles point again rested on the shoulders of junior Kelley Anderson and freshman Savannah Slaysman on court two. Also like Friday, the two drew the higher-ranked opponent in No. 23 Olivia Hauger and Karla Popovic and fell in a 6-3 battle.

From there, Cal rolled that lead into singles, taking all six singles points across the board.

The Devils only forced two three-set matches, with No. 48 Hampton getting the best of the opening set against No. 45 Maegan Manasse on court two. Manasse rallied for the 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 comeback win.

Fossa-Huergo captured the first set over No. 96 Olivia Hauger on court four in a tiebreak point, 7-6(5). The match came down to a tiebreak third set, which Hauger won 1-0(1) for the win.

The Devils will return to the court this Wednesday for a mid-week matinee, as they host UNLV in their rescheduled match from the rain-out on Feb. 19. First serve is set for 12 p.m. PT at Whiteman Tennis Center.
