Bakersfield, Calif. -- The sixth-ranked Arizona State water polo team (16-4) swept the opening day of play at the 2017 Roadrunner Invitational, first defeating CSU Bakersfield 18-6 Saturday morning, before topping Princeton, 7-6, in the afternoon game. 

On the day, five different Sun Devil players recorded multiple goals, led by junior Lena Mihailovic, who netted a team-high five goals on the day. In the cage, goalie Mia Rycraw carded 14 saves for the Sun Devils.

GAME ONE: ASU 16, CSUB 8 
in the first game of the day, the Sun Devils topped MPSF foe, and 22nd- ranked, CSUB, 16-8, behind a five goal performance from Mihailovic. ASU found themselves in a dogfight early on, as both teams netted four goals in the first quarter of play. 

The slugfest continued in the second, as neither team was able to separate themselves from the other, sending the game to halftime with ASU holding a narrow, 9-6, lead.

The Sun Devils were able to pull ahead in the third, netting five goals, before adding two more in the fourth to close out the 16-8 victory.

Alkistis Benkou and Maud Koopman both played important roles in the Sun Devil win, each adding three goals of their own in the game. Stephanie Contreras added two goals while Rosie Huck, Bente Rogge and Taylor Bertrand  rounded out the ASU scoring with a goal each.

GAME TWO: ASU 7, PRINCETON 6
The Sun Devils played another tightly contested first half in game two of the Saturday doubleheader, this time against No. 9 Princeton.

Both teams found the back of the net early, sending the game to the second quarter of play tied at three-all. With defense taking over in the second, both teams were only able to add a goal each in the second, to make it a tie game at the half.

Following the break, the Sun Devils jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the third, and held off a late push by the Tigers in the fourth, to warp the Sun Devil win.   

Conteras led the way for ASU in the second game of the day, scoring twice in the win, marking her third and fourth goal of the day. 

The Sun Devils will be back in the pool tomorrow to close out the 2017 Roadrunner invitational with a 9 a.m. contest against Cal State East Bay.
