PALO ALTO, Calif. – The Arizona State women's tennis team was on the cusp of making a dramatic rally for the doubles point early against No. 4 Stanford on the Pac-12 Network on Friday afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center.

The No. 45 Devils (7-4, 2-1) battled to the end, but eventually fell at the hands of the Cardinal, 4-0.

"We definitely had a chance to win the doubles point," said head coach Sheila McInerney. "We played with a lot of energy and I was happy with our level overall. I thought we were a bit unlucky not to win the point."

After a victory on court three and a loss on court one, the first point of the match came down to junior Kelley Anderson and freshman Savannah Slaysman on court two. The duo rallied from down 5-2 to force a seven-point tiebreak, but eventually fell victim to a rally from No. 29 Caroline Doyle and Melissa Lord and the 7-6(5) loss.

That appeared to suck the life out of the Devils, as they didn't come out with the same energy in singles minutes later.

"Our singles overall were disappointing, with the exception of Kassidy (Jump) and Gussie (O'Sullivan), we got off to very slow starts," said McInerney. "Stanford took advantage of that and steamrolled us in the several of the singles matches."

On court one, No. 97 Kassidy Jump started as she has in several of her last matches against top-ranked opponents. This time, she captured the first set, 6-4, over No. 69 Taylor Davidson. Their match would eventually be suspended in the second set.

On two, No. 48 Sammi Hampton dropped the first set against No. 36 Caroline Doyle, 6-1, but battled in the second to a 6-3 win to force a third set. Like Jump, her match would eventually be suspended in the third set.

Courts three, four and five ended up being the daggers for the Devils, as Stanford captured straight-set sweeps. Junior Kelley Anderson – ranked No. 70 – drew a tough draw with No. 13 Melissa Lord on court three, while fellow junior Nicole Fossa Huergo and Slaysman both faced top-75 ranked opponents on their respective courts.

ASU turns around for another top-ranked matchup on Saturday afternoon, as they trek to No. 12 California for a 12 p.m. PT match.
