INDIANAPOLIS – Arizona State women's swim and dive completed their first day of competition at the NCAA championships with a distance event as well as their first relay.
"Our inexperience showed this morning, however I thought we gave good effort," said head coach Bob Bowman. "Stepping up to this level is a huge challenge and any minor mistake costs you scoring positions. Tomorrow I'm looking forward to more focused performances and better scoring opportunities."
Senior Kat Simonovic finished the 500 free prelim in 4:44.70 while Kendall Dawson finished four spots later in 4:44.94 in her first-ever NCAA championships event.
Simonovic and Dawson's prelim times were among the team's top-10 times in the event this season.
In ASU's second prelim of the day, the 400 medley relay, a pair of seniors and a duo of freshmen comprised the relay team. Ingibjorg Jonsdottir swam leadoff followed by newcomer Silja Kansakoski, Simonovic, and freshman Claire Fisch. Fisch touched the wall for the relay team at the 3:34.11 mark.
The Sun Devils swam their second fastest 400 medley relay of the season, just behind their qualifying time from Pac-12 championships.
Friday brings the 100 breast and 200 free trials in the morning (10 am ET) and the finals of both events as well as the 200 medley relay consolation/finals in the evening (6 pm ET).
The morning sessions over the next two days will streamed live on NCAA.com with each evening's championship finals on ESPN3. Live results are also available on NCAA.com.
