COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Arizona State redshirt junior Maggie Ewen earned a First-Team All-American honor with a fourth-place finish in the shot put at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday afternoon at Texas A&M's Gilliam Indoor Stadium. It becomes the highest indoor championship finish by a Sun Devil female thrower since Sarah Stevens' second-place finish in 2009, and also the first indoor first-team honor by a Sun Devil female since Anna Jelmini in 2014.
While Ewen didn't eclipse her personal best set earlier this year, her first throw of 17.57m (57-7.75) was among one of her best marks this season and her highest-ever finish at an NCAA championship in the shot put.
"I'm really happy with how today went," said Ewen. "It was the third furthest throw and the second best meet of my life. So really, no matter how I placed, it would be hard to be upset."
A year ago, Ewen finished 15th out of 16 competitors in the shot put at what was her first NCAA championship appearance.
The first-team honor becomes her third in a row, as the St. Francis, Minnesota-native also captured two -- in the discus and hammer throw -- at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She came in 19th in the shot put at the outdoor championships in Eugene.
Ole Miss' Raven Saunders -- who competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics -- won the event with a new collegiate and NCAA meet record of 19.56m (64-2.25).
In less than 24 hours, Ewen will compete in the weight throw for a chance at earning her sixth All-American honor and fourth first-team honor of her three-year career. The event will begin at 3:30 p.m. MST.
