TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devil women's tennis team shut out Colorado (8-5, 0-2) on Saturday with their second-straight 4-0 win in as many days at Whiteman Tennis Center.
ASU (7-3, 2-0) made it a clean sweep of their Pac-12 opening weekend, as they didn't surrender a single point to either Utah or the Buffaloes.
"It was another great day for us and I thought the ladies played well," said head coach Sheila McInerney. "The score showed 4-0 both days, but both matches were certainly tougher than they look. Colorado battled and didn't make it easy. But it's nice to get two victories as we head into a tough weekend in northern California next week."
For the second-straight match, No. 44 Alex Osborne and Nicole Fossa-Huergo clinched the doubles point for the Devils for the early 1-0 lead on court one.
After No. 59 Kassidy Jump and Sammi Hampton rallied from a 2-0 deficit for the 6-2 win on court three, Osborne and Fossa-Huergo were in a race to capture the clinching point with junior Kelley Anderson and freshman Savannah Slaysman on court two. The top-ranked doubles pair lost just one point in the set.
Friday's hero, Fossa-Huergo, made it 2-0 for ASU to start singles after making quick work of Chloe Hule on court four, 6-2, 6-1.
Minutes later, Hampton put away Louise Ronaldson with an ace for the sixth-straight point in the second set and the 6-3, 6-0 victory.
On Saturday, it was 'The Grinder' Gussie O'Sullivan clinching the match for the Devils, as she rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Brigitte Beck on court six.
The competition for McInerney and her squad will ramp back up this coming week, as they travel to northern California for matches with No. 14 Stanford on Friday, March 17 and No. 12 California on Saturday, March 18.
