TEMPE, Ariz. – On Monday, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced the indoor region athletes of the year, and redshirt junior Maggie Ewen was selected as the West Region Female Field Athlete of the Year.

Ewen becomes the first female Sun Devil to win the indoor award since seven-time NCAA Champion Jacquelyn Johnson in 2008, and the first female to win an indoor or outdoor award since national champion discus thrower Anna Jelmini in 2011. The last ASU track and field athlete to win a regional award was NCAA high jump Champion Bryan McBride in 2015.

The St. Francis, Minnesota-native qualified for both the shot put and weight throw at this coming weekend's NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas.

Under new throws coach Brian Blutreich, Ewen has continuously improved her marks each week of competition through the MPSF Indoor Conference Championships just over a week ago. That constant progression led her to win her second weight throw indoor conference title in as many years, while finishing third in the shot put.

Ewen has shot up the record books in both events, now owning the second-best shot put and third-best weight throw marks in ASU indoor history.

In 2016, Ewen was a two-time outdoor First-Team All-American after finishing fifth in the hammer throw and eighth in the discus, making her the first female Sun Devil thrower to earn multiple outdoor First-Team honors since Sarah Stevens in 2009.

She also qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2016, finishing 15th in the shot put.

Following the indoor season, she will enter the 2017 outdoor season holding the Pac-12 and ASU record in the hammer throw, after breaking it with a toss of 70.50m (231-3) at the 2016 NCAA West Regional event.

The redshirt junior is scheduled to compete on Friday, March 10 at 5:15 p.m. CST in the shot put, and on Saturday, March 11 at 4:30 p.m. CST in the weight throw. Live results for the championships can be found here, while live streaming will be courtesy of ESPN3.
