Arizona State and the current top-ranked team in the nation Kansas have agreed to a home-and-home series that begins next December, the Sun Devils announced today. Next season ASU will visit Kansas on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2017, while the Jayhawks will visit Tempe the following season on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018.
"We have made it a priority to try and schedule the best programs in the nation. Having Kansas come to Tempe in December of 2018 will be an incredible experience for our fans," notes Ray Anderson, Vice President of Athletics. "Kansas and Coach Bill Self have been among the best in college basketball. We look forward to visiting Allen Fieldhouse next year and then welcoming the Jayhawks and their fan base to Tempe in December of 2018. We are continuing to find ways to provide increased value for our season ticket holders while providing our student-athletes another opportunity to play against one of the most respected programs in the country."
Kansas has been to the NCAA Tournament the past 27 seasons and won its 13th straight Big 12 regular season title this season. It won the national title in 1952 and in 1988, and then in 2008 under head coach Bill Self.
"We are excited about playing Kansas in each of the next two seasons. We have had our team travel to Lexington last year, play the No. 1 team in the Bahamas and also play in the Jimmy V Classic in Madison Square Garden, so this is another great step," notes Coach Bobby Hurley. "This home-and-home is the kind of series we want on our schedule. Getting great programs to visit Wells Fargo Arena is a high priority, and we appreciate Kansas and Coach Self agreeing to what will be a very entertaining two-year match-up."
Arizona State and Kansas have met nine times, with the last meeting a 108-76 Kansas win in the second round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament in Oklahoma City. Kansas last played at Arizona State in the season opener on Nov. 23, 1990.
