SAN DIEGO, Calif. – For the third-straight match, the No. 30 Sun Devil women's tennis team captured a straight sweep, and this time a 4-0 shutout against the University of San Diego on Sunday, Feb. 26. The women didn't lose a single point all weekend on the west coast, outscoring their two opponents 10-0.
ASU's (5-1, 0-0) doubles won their sixth dual match point this season, as all three pairs remain undefeated in dual match play.
"I was pleased with our performance today," said head coach Sheila McInerney. "I thought we came out and competed well in very tough conditions after the two hour and 30 minute rain delay. It was cold and windy, but our girls were gritty against a good USD team. It's good to get two road wins and we look forward to hosting two excellent teams this coming week in Pepperdine and Ohio State."
On court two, junior Kelley Anderson and freshman Savannah Slaysman won their match in a landslide, 6-1, to give the Devils the first doubles match.
Minutes later, senior Kassidy Jump and sophomore Sammi Hampton helped clinch the doubles point with a 6-2 win and sixth-straight this season.
After entering singles with a 1-0 lead, junior Nicole Fossa-Huergo and senior Gussie O'Sullivan made quick work of their matches on courts four and six, respectively.
Fossa-Huergo rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Maria-Paula Torres, capturing her third-straight singles victory.
The grinder handled Sophia Chow 6-0, 6-1 for her sixth victory in her last seven outings.
It was only fitting that Anderson clinched the fourth and match-deciding point for the Sun Devils, as it kept her winning streak alive and now at 10-straight. She took care of business on court three against Gemma Garcia, 6-3, 6-4.
All three other courts went unfinished, as they played clinch-clinch.
The No. 30 Devils now return home for two top-20 opponents, as they host No. 12 Pepperdine on Friday, March 3 at 1:30 p.m. MST and No. 2 Ohio State on Sunday, March 5 at 12 p.m. MST at Whiteman Tennis Center.
