FORT WORTH, TEXAS – Sun Devil Baseball dropped the rubber match in its series at No. 1 TCU on Sunday, falling 5-2 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Spencer Van Scoyoc pitched a gem in his second career start for the Sun Devils, allowing no earned runs and just two hits in 6.0 IP for his first career quality start as he held the potent TCU lineup largely in check. Van Scoyoc worked around several jams, walking five while striking out four and picking up several timely outs in the appearance.

For the third time in the series, Tyler Williams accounted for the first ASU run of the game, an RBI ground out to plate Jackson Willeford in the top of the fifth as the Devils (4-3) struck first.  Carter Aldrete brought a runner home for the third time in the series on the very next at bat with an RBI single to plate Taylor Lane and stake an early 2-0 lead in favor of the Devils.

The Frogs (6-1) got on the board on the bottom half of the inning on an infield scoring error and loaded the bases in the frame but Van Scoyoc escaped with a 2-1 lead in tow.

The tide turned late in the contest upon Van Scoyoc's departure from the game as the ASU bullpen gave up a combined four two-out runs in the seventh and eighth innings as TCU took over a 5-2 lead to pave the way for All-American closer Durbin Feltman.

The Devils threatened against the hard-throwing right-hander, putting runners on second and third and bringing the tying run to the plate but failed to bring anyone across as the Horned Frogs held on for the victory.

NOTES: Tyler Williams now has an RBI in four consecutive games, as does Carter Aldrete…Jackson Willeford made his first start of the season at second base, going 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored…Gage Canning remains the only Sun Devil with a hit in all seven games this season while also laying two sacrifice bunts in the effort…

UP NEXT: The Sun Devils kick off a lengthy homestand beginning Tuesday, Feb. 28 against New Mexico State at Phoenix Municipal Stadium, the first of 12 home games in a 19-day span over the month of March.
