Tempe, Ariz.- Arizona State Softball improved to 8-0 on the season with a 6-4 win over the Wichita State Shockers in their first game of the 2017 Littlewood Classic Friday evening.
The Sun Devil offense off to a strong start, putting up five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore outfielder Fa Leilua ignited the ASU offense with a bases-loaded double off the centerfield wall that brought in two runs for the Sun Devils. Junior outfielder, Nichole Chilson, did not wait long to add on as she hit a three-run homerun over the centerfield wall that emptied the bases and gave the ASU an early five run lead.
The Devils continued their scoring onslaught in the second inning when senior catcher, Sashel Palacios, hit an RBI single to right field to bring in Taylor Becerra, which put ASU up 6-0 going into the third.
The Sun Devil defense kept the Shocker offense quiet the first two innings, but the visitors answered back with a four run, five hit, third inning.
Junior Dale Ryndak started for the Devils in the circle and handed the ball over in the top of the fourth to fellow junior, Breanna Macha, who came in and recorded her second save of the season.
The Sun Devils will return to the field at 8 p.m. to take on Illinois State in the second game of tonight's doubleheader. A full recap of today's games will follow the conclusion of game two.
