TEMPE, Ariz. – Former Arizona State University Assistant Athletics Director of Football Operations and High School Relations John Wrenn has been named the 2017 recipient of the Frank Kush Lifetime Achievement Coaching Award from the Valley of the Sun Chapter of the National Football Foundation.
The award recognizes outstanding Arizona high school and/or college coaches who have contributed significantly to the game. Wrenn becomes the seventh individual with ASU ties to win the award, joining the award's namesake, former ASU Head Coach Frank Kush, as well as fellow Head Coaches Bruce Snyder and Ed Doherty, former ASU assistant coach Larry Kentera, former ASU Director of Athletics Dick Tamburo and former ASU student-athlete and Arizona High School coaching legend Karl Kiefer.
"l am very humbled to receive this award that is named after a person that I have great respect and love for," says Wrenn.
Wrenn, who spent 23 seasons as a High School head coach in Illinois and Arizona, was named Arizona High School Coach of the Year three times while at Hamilton High School in Chandler (1999, 2003 and 2004). During his eight-year tenure at Hamilton, Wrenn's teams posted a 91-11 won-loss record, winning two state championships.
Wrenn joined the staff of former ASU Head Coach Dirk Koetter in 2006 as running backs and special teams coach. He served as Director of Football Operations and High School Relations for eight seasons under Head Coaches Dennis Erickson and Todd Graham, retiring from the position in 2014. Wrenn still serves as a consultant for Coach Graham's operations staff.
Wrenn will receive the Frank Kush Lifetime Achievement Coaching Award as part of the Valley of the Sun Chapter of the National Football Foundation's 36th annual Scholar Athlete Awards Banquet, Saturday, April 8, at the Hilton Scottsdale Resort.
