TEMPE, Ariz. – In game one of Senior Weekend, the Sun Devils rolled to an 8-1 victory in an exhibition game over Simon Fraser University of Canada on Friday night at Oceanside Ice Arena.
Freshman defenseman Brinson Pasichnuk paced the Devils with his first hat trick of the season, netting three and assisting on another two for a five-point night and the first star of the game.
"Obviously it doesn't matter who you play, you have to show up," said head coach Greg Powers. "We talked about finding our identity and we found it -- your identity is who you are and you can never stray from it no matter who you're playing. We have to play to our identity and we did that tonight. That's how you build a winning culture."
After getting off to a slow 1-0 start through the first 20 minutes, ASU exploded in the second frame for five goals and all within a span of just over seven minutes.
It was an underclassmen takeover, as freshman Brett Gruber, sophomore Anthony Croston, freshman Tyler Busch and redshirt sophomore Louie Rowe all netted a goal in the second period in that order.
Croston just wrapped up the NCAA portion of the Devils' schedule as the team leader in goals scored, and showed he wasn't out of gas just yet. He finished the night with four shots on goal and a plus-2 rating.
While little brother Brinson combined for the front and back cover of the game – netting the Devils first and then final two goals of the game – big brother Steenn made it an all-Pasichnuk night with family and friends in the stands. The 6-foot-4 forward showed he's more than just brawn, as he sniped a shot passed Simon Fraser goaltender Lyndon Stanwood for the final goal of the second.
Steenn earned the game's third star of the night with a goal and an assist with five shots on goal and a plus-3 rating.
In the first three minutes of the third period, Brinson earned the final two-thirds of his hat trick with both of his goals coming on the man advantage.
With his second shutout of the season on the line, senior goaltender Robert Levin was finally dealt a bad hand, as a turnover in the neutral zone led to a breakaway opportunity for Simon Fraser. Forward Brendan Lamont skated down the left side before firing one passed Levin for SFU's only goal of the game.
Levin ended his night saving 19 of 20 shots on goal.
ASU finished their night on special teams going 2-for-4 on the power play and a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill as well.
Game two will be Saturday night, as the four Sun Devil seniors – Drew Newmeyer, Robbie Baillargeon, Ryan Belonger and Robert Levin – are all recognized during pregame.
Tickets are still available here for the 7:05 p.m. puck drop.
