TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devils are set to close the regular season with their cross-state rivalry meet at Arizona on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 11:30 am MT in Tucson. The meet will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network and Pac-12 Network Arizona.
THE DETAILS
Saturday's meet takes place at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center (E Enke Dr. Tucson, AZ 85719) on the University of Arizona campus.
A territorial cup point is not on the line this weekend, as that will be decided at the Pac-12 championships in late February and early March.
TIME STANDARDS AND NCAA QUALIFICATION
The Sun Devil men have achieved at least one B-cut in every NCAA event except the 200-free relay, of which ASU is less than a second off. Tadas Duskinas, Richard Bohus, Andrew Porter, and Cameron Craig swam the Devils' fastest time of the season thus far (1:18.51) and the provisional standard is 1:18.46.
Several of the ASU women's swimmers have also achieved faster than B-cut times including Alysha Bush (50 free, 100 free), Claire Fisch (50 free), Kat Simonovic (100 free, 200 free, 500 free), Ingibjorg Jonsdottir (100 back), Silja Kansakoski (100 breast), Emily Glinecke (100 breast), Marlies Ross (200 breast, 200 IM, 400 IM), and Chloe Isleta (400 IM).
In diving, David Hoffer, Heikki Makikallio, and Mara Aiacoboae had already achieved the diving standard in all three dives. Last weekend, newcomers Rebecca Deacon and Youssef Selim achieved the standard in just two possible attempts in both the 1 mtr and 3 mtr dives.
RANKINGS
The Sun Devil men moved back up to #13 in the Feb. 1 version of the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Poll.
Arizona is ranked similarly on both sides, with the men at #17 (moving down from #11 in the previous poll) and the women staying at #17 in the most recent set of rankings.
SCOUTING ARIZONA
Most recently, the Wildcats fell at Texas as the men were outscored, 164-121, and the women lost, 164-128.
Among common opponents, the U of A men also defeated USC, 172-126, in November while the women beat both Oregon State and NAU, also losing to Cal and Stanford.
The Arizona men are 2-4 this season while the women are 6-5.
LAST TIME OUT
A season ago, in Tempe, in the teams' annual meeting, the Sun Devil men defeated then-#17 Arizona, 168-132, for the first time since 2002. The men broke five school records in front of a 2,000-member sold out crowd.
As part of the event, Michael Phelps, Allison Schmitt, and several other post-graduate swimmers swam exhibition events during the diving breaks.
SCHOLAR ALL-AMERICA
Both the Sun Devil men and women earned CSCAA Scholar All-America Team honors for Fall 2016, one of just three Pac-12 schools (also: Stanford, Utah) to have both teams honored.
The honor goes to programs that have achieved a 3.00 team GPA or higher during the fall semester. The ASU women posted a 3.39 GPA, .17 higher than a season ago, while the men combined for a 3.04 GPA.
NEXT UP
The ASU women's swim and men's/women's dive teams travel to Federal Way, Wash. for the Pac-12 Championships Feb. 22-25 while the men's swim team heads north Mar. 1-4.
The NCAA Zone E Diving Championships follow Mar. 6-8 in Flagstaff, Ariz. before the women's NCAA's take place Mar. 15-18 and the men's take place Mar. 23-25, both in Indianapolis, Ind.
