DENVER, Colo. – For the second-straight night, the Sun Devils were dealt the short end of the stick in the Mile High City – both figuratively and literally – in a 6-1 loss to No. 3 Denver on Saturday night.
After taking nine penalties on Friday, the Devils (7-16-1) were issued another six in game two, setting up another two power-play tallies for the Pioneers (14-4-4).
"Outside of (Ryland) Pashovitz, I just don't think we competed hard enough over the course of the weekend, especially tonight," said head coach Greg Powers. "We don't have the skill to solely rely on against anybody without a consistently high-compete level. Let alone against a team as good as Denver. We'll continue to draw from these experiences as we build our program."
After a 9-3 penalty difference on Friday, Denver managed to go without a minor until the final three minutes of the game, as Kevin Conley was called for slashing. This would lead to the only goal of the night for the Devils, as freshman Brett Gruber wristed one passed senior goaltender Evan Cowley. It became Gruber's fourth goal of the season and first since Dec. 17 against UMass.
The power-play tally would be the second in two nights, being the only two goals scored by the Devils in the series.
Saturday also brought the return of World Junior Classic hero from Team USA, Troy Terry. The sophomore and Anaheim fifth-round draft pick played a huge role for the Pioneers, netting two goals along with two helpers.
Between the pipes, Pashovitz was again peppered by Denver shots, making 28 saves on 31 shots before being replaced by freshman Joey Daccord halfway through the game. Down the stretch, Daccord faced another 17 shots.
Pashovitz made one of the plays of the night during his stretch, robbing Tyson McLellan on a breakaway with a flash of the glove.
By the end of the night, the Devils were outshot 48-18 and 95-37 on the weekend.
Powers and the boys will hit refresh and turn around for a trip to Columbus, Ohio for a two-game series with No. 11 Ohio State next Friday and Saturday. Game two on Saturday will be televised on ESPNU at 2:00 p.m. ET/12:00 p.m. MT.
