SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Anthony Valencia receives his first career Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week honor for earning two bonus point victories as the Sun Devils went 2-0 in duals at Iowa State (Jan. 6) and home vs. Cal Poly (Jan. 8) last week. Valencia has won eight of his last nine matches of the season overall.
Valencia's pin of Cal Poly's Luke Wilson was the Sun Devils' third fastest pin of the season (:43) and his team-leading sixth pin this year (brother Zahid Valencia also has six). Among Pac-12 wrestlers, Valencia's six pins this season is good for third in the conference.
An 18-1 tech fall vs. Iowa State's Logan Breitenbach earned ASU key points in a comeback at Iowa State on Friday to start last weekend. The Sun Devils came from behind to earn their first victory in Ames since the 1989 season.
The Sun Devils compete at this weekend's Virginia Duals (Jan. 13-14) before returning home to host North Carolina Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. The UNC dual is the program's now-annual MMA match, where many MMA favorites, including several Sun Devil alums, will be in attendance for the match.
Also nominated: Fred Green (Boise State), Russell Rohlfing (CSU Bakersfield), Colton Schilling (Cal Poly), Peter Galli (Stanford)
