TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State Water Polo ended the weekend with a 2-2 record against New York Athletic Club (NYAC), after splitting the final two games of the four game exhibition series at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
NYAC held off a late push by the Sun Devils in the first of two games on Sunday to escape with a 10-9 victory over ASU, and take a 2-1 lead in the weekend series.
Powered by a four goal effort from former team USA competitor Lauren Silver, NYAC poured on a steady attack that saw five goals in each half of game one that also saw the visitors outshoot the Sun Devils 35-19 in the contest.
Despite the lopsided shooting attempt numbers, ASU never let NYAC get a comfortable lead, holding the visiting club to no more than a two goal lead through the first three periods of play. During the fourth period, however, NYAC was able to stretch their lead to three goals twice, but the Sun Devils would respond, ending the game with two unanswered goals, and just missed a third goal that would have tied the game as time expired.
ASU also received another stellar outing by junior goalie Mia Rycraw, who recorded 12 saves in game one on Sunday.
Following a brief intermission, the two teams reentered the pool for the fourth and final game of the exhibition series. Serving as the last live action for the Sun Devil squad before beginning league play later this month, the two squads played a situational scrimmage in the fourth contest of the weekend.
With an agreement between the two coaches, each goal scored resulted in the scoring team receiving three power play chances, or a penalty shot opportunity. When the final buzzer sounded, ASU had outscored NYAC, 27-14.
The Sun Devils were lead in game four by sophomore Maud Koopman who netted a total of eight goals, including three in the third period. Fellow sophomore Julia Reyes finished with five goals accounting for another of ASU's seven total players with multiple goals in the contest.
On the weekend, Koopman led all scorers with 15 total goals, followed by Lena Mihailovic who netted nine total goals. In the four games played, the Sun Devils did outscore NYAC by a total of 13 goals with the weekend matchup culminating in a 57-44 score.
The Sun Devils will be back in action on January 28, when they will host San Diego State as part of the 2017 ASU Tournament. Fans can follow all of the action from the 2017 Sun Devil season by following @ASUWaterPolo on Twitter.
