TEMPE, Ariz. – After facing Utah earlier in the season, the Sun Devil women open their Pac-12 schedule in earnest hosting Oregon State.

THE DETAILS

The Sun Devils' first meet of 2017 will take place Saturday, Jan. 7 at 12 noon at Mona Plummer Aquatic Complex (601 S College Ave. Tempe, AZ 85287). Admission is free to the public.

SCOUTING OREGON STATE

The Beavers have a busy start to 2017, competing in a meet Friday in Tucson against Arizona, Northern Arizona, and New Mexico State before making the short trip north to Tempe.

Oregon State finished 2016 at Hawai'i, a tri-meet with UH and Dartmouth College, amidst the winter training trip. OSU lost to Hawai'i, 189-102, while posting a win vs. Dartmouth, 172-111. Five Beavers recorded top times in the meet, highlighted by freshman Felicia Anderson who recorded a first and second place finish.

The Sun Devils are 8-0 all-time vs. the Beavers, last winning in Corvallis, 109-94, a season ago.

SUN DEVILS AMONG MOST IMPROVED

CollegeSwimming.com recently released their rankings of most improved men's and women's teams from this time last year to now. The ASU men and women were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 on their respective lists.

ASU and Stanford were the only two teams to feature both men's and women's teams in the top 10 while ASU was the only school to have both teams in the top three.

CollegeSwimming notes the most-improved teams were mainly due to three factors: coaching changes, incoming freshmen, and improved performances among upperclassmen and all three certainly are true of the Devils.

LAST TIME OUT

The Sun Devil women hosted Northern Arizona in mid-December and touched first in all but one event, sailing to a 172-114 win. Kat Simonovic (100 fly – 55.72) and Chloe Isleta (2:02.29) set new season highs for ASU.

Isleta led the way for the Devils, touching first in three events (200 fly, 200 back, 200 IM), while Kendall Dawson won both distance events (500, 1000 free). Captains Simonovic (200 free, 100 fly), and Alysha Bush (50, 100 free) also won multiple events on the day.

In the 200 IM, Isleta and Marlies Ross finished 1-2, over 10 seconds faster than the remaining competitors.

NEXT UP

Following winter training, both teams return to competition Friday, Jan. 20 at 2 pm vs. Stanford and Saturday, Jan. 21 at 12 noon vs. Cal.

The Jan. 21 meet will also serve as Senior Day, the teams' final home competition of 2016-17 before closing the regular season on the road at Arizona (Feb. 4).
