PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. – Day one of the Desert Hockey Classic didn't disappoint if you were into high-scoring affairs, as a total of 24 goals were scored between the two games on Friday at the Prescott Valley Events Center.
The more relevant game of the night for Sun Devil fans ended in an 8-8 tie, as ASU (7-13-1) and Brown (3-9-1) went back and forth into double overtime. While it goes down as a tie in the books, the Bears scored during 3-on-3 to advance to the championship game on Saturday.
"It was a crazy game," said head coach Greg Powers. "It was one of those games, I don't even know how to comment on it because I've never been a part of a game like that. It's disappointing at the end of the day … we were up a goal with a minute left. We had a puck on a stick in our zone and fanned on it. We get that puck out we win the game outright in regulation and go on to tomorrow."
The game could have finished in several different ways, as there was a total of six lead changes. That included a two-goal rally by the Devils in the second period to eventually pull away to a 6-4 lead entering the third period.
That rally came behind goals from redshirt junior Wade Murphy, redshirt sophomores Dylan Hollman and Louie Rowe and sophomore Joey Raats. Both Murphy and Rowe extended their point streaks to six games, while Louie's two-goal, one-assist night brings his total to four goals and four assists during that stretch. Raats' goal became his first of the season as well.
Rowe's line with sophomore Anthony Croston and Hollman totaled three goals and seven assists, with Croston tallying a program-best five assists to earn star of the game for the Devils.
Also finding the back of the net was freshman defenseman Jakob Stridsberg, who earned his first multi-goal night of his career with two tallies.
On special teams, the Sun Devils finished a season-best 50 percent (2-for-4), while Brown capitalized on two as well in five opportunities.
While the Devils still allowed eight goals in regulation, it was the eight goals scored that had Powers still pleased with his team.
"Obviously when you score eight goals it's a good thing," said Powers. "It's some of the defensive mistakes that we made were so uncharacteristic in the guys that were making them. Really uncharacteristic."
The eight goals brings ASU's total to 26 scored over the past six games.
With the game ending in a tie, the Devils still remain undefeated in their past four outings.
Brown will go on to meet UCONN in the Desert Hockey Classic Championship game, while ASU will play No. 18 St. Cloud State at 7 p.m. MST. It will be the third meeting with the Huskies, as the Devils were swept in St. Cloud by a total of 13-1 nearly a year ago to date.
