TEMPE, Ariz. -- Three members of the Arizona State Cross Country program earned Pac-12 All-Academic First-Team Honors, the conference announced Monday. An additional five Sun Devils were awarded honorable mention.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
Senior CJ Albertson, redshirt junior Cody Brazeal and redshirt sophomore John Reniewicki all maintain above a 3.75 GPA for first-team honors, becoming the second-straight season each were named to the first-team list.
Albertson, who has now earned first-team honors in all three eligible seasons, graduated with his bachelor's degree in exercise and wellness in the fall of 2015. The senior is now pursuing his master's degree in physical education with an expected graduation date of spring 2017. In the postseason, Albertson finished 25th at the Pac-12 Championships and 29th at the NCAA West Regional.
During the course of the regular season, he also placed first in two events while adding an additional two top-five finishes.
Brazeal helped the Devils score in four of the six events he competed in during the 2016 season. This is also the third straight season Brazeal has made the first-team list, as a 4.00 student with a major in biological sciences and focus in animal physiology.
The youngest of the bunch, Reniewicki, holds a 3.86 GPA in graphic design and is the second-straight year he has been selected for the academic team. The redshirt sophomore made strides in his second competitive season, with a 64th place finish at the NCAA West Regional. He also had 2nd, 5th, 9th and 13th place finishes during the regular season.
