MANSFIELD/AUSTIN, Texas – Going into the day, No. 11 Sun Devils men's swimming trailed top team No. 14 Texas A&M and No. 17 LSU by 30.5 and 25 points, respectively, but another strong day zoomed ASU to the top as they ended the meet with an overall 50-point victory.
The women finished fourth as a dominant No. 10 Texas A&M won the meet on the women's side. The ASU men improved from a fifth place finish last year while the women improved from an eighth place finish.
"I'm very proud of both teams this weekend," head swim coach Bob Bowman said of the teams' performance this weekend. "We are light years ahead of where we were last year in team culture and spirit and this is showing in our performances."
Senior Richard Bohus capped a stellar meet with his second individual ASU record broken, this time in the 200 backstroke (1:41.34), breaking Barkley Perry's record. Perry finished just behind Bohus in second.
In the final event of the evening and the entire meet, ASU captured their third relay win of the meet in the men's 400 yard freestyle (Bohus, Tadas Duskinas, Patrick Park, Cameron Craig). The Sun Devils' "B" and "C" relay teams also showed dominance, picking up double digit points in the event.
Patrick Park captured the 200 fly title while Zach Poti also earned double-digit points by finishing eighth.
Four of seven "A" finalists in the men's 100 yard free were Sun Devils including Craig in second (43.44), Duskinas in third (43.95), Park in fifth (44.31), and Bohus in sixth (44.38).
On the women's side, Krista Kolkebeck won the 100 free "C" final with a time of 50.50.
In Saturday's diving finale, the men's and women's platform dives, Mara Aiacoboae finished first on the women's side (327.80) while David Hoffer (426.25) and Heikki Makikallio (408.55) went 2-3 for the men. Hoffer finished just four points behind the first-place finisher from Texas, Mark Anderson.
The teams wrapping up the first half of the season, Bowman added, "The men really stepped up today to win the team title and our women are racing well and moving forward each meet. We have a lot of things we can improve on and I look forward to our holiday training block."
The ASU women return home for one final meet before the end of 2016, hosting Northern Arizona on Friday, Dec. 16 at 2 p.m.
