STATE COLLEGE, Penn. – The Arizona State men's hockey team ran out of steam at the back end of their 10-day road trip on Saturday afternoon, as No. 10 Penn State rolled to an 8-0 victory.
"It was unfortunate. It got away from us early," said head coach Greg Powers. "I think our guys were tired – I don't want to make excuses for our guys, but I think Penn State knew we were on the back end of a long trip and on short rest. They wanted to put us away early and they did unfortunately. Now we go back home, we have to build them back up, enjoy a four-game home stand and get back on the right track."
For just the second time this season, the Sun Devils (2-11-0) were held scoreless behind an 18-save night by Nittany Lion freshman goaltender Chris Funkey.
ASU certainly had its chances to get on the scoreboard, as three breakaway opportunities and several loose pucks in the crease were stymied by Funkey in his third career start.
Offensively, Penn State (11-1-1) scored at even strength, on the power play and shorthanded. All eight goals were by different players as well within a total of 51 shots on goal.
Senior goaltender Robert Levin started the game between the pipes making 10 saves on 14 shots, but was replaced by sophomore Ryland Pashovitz late in the first period.
The Devils return home for a four-game stretch starting with a two-game series versus RPI on Friday, Nov. 25 at Oceanside Ice Arena. Tickets are still available here.
