TEMPE, Ariz-- Arizona State softball closed their unbeaten fall season with a pair of wins over Yavapai College and South Mountain College in Saturday's doubleheader at Farrington Stadium.
"I am really excited about the progress we have made through the fall," head coach Trisha Ford said. "As a team we are feeling really good, but I do want them to know that there is so much more we need to work on. I thought we did a good job today. Our bats came back which is a good thing. I think the thing I am most excited about is that our pitching has been really solid this fall."
Junior pitcher Breanna Macha led the Sun Devils in the circle, throwing four scoreless innings where she only gave up two hits. Macha struck out five of the 19 batters she faced, while working ahead in all but one at bat. The Mesa, Ariz., native threw 15 first pitch strikes, that included a three pitch fourth inning.
"She has the tools," Ford said of Macha. "She has done a great job this fall of getting her mind right. When you have a new coach it is tough because you have to build that trust and she has been great. Our pitching has the potential to keep us in a lot of games and I am extremely excited about that group."
At the plate, ASU strung together 16 total hits that included a home run by Sashel Palacios in the fifth.
In game two, the Sun Devil pitching staff combined to hold South Mountain to just four total hits in the contest. Freshman Allyssa Loza led the way in the circle, starting the game with two strong innings where she was able to manage the game and hold the Cougars to just three hits.
From there, Gizel Juarez and Dale Ryndak who allowed just one more hit in the final five frames of fall play.
The Sun Devils will be back in action during the spring semester as the team will look to make their 29th appearance in the NCAA Tournament in Ford's first season as head coach.
