LOS ANGELES—The Arizona State volleyball team (7-10, 0-5 Pac-12) fell to No. 22 USC in four sets, 15-25, 18-25, 27-25, 20-25, on Wednesday night at the Galen Center.
"We need to start playing like we did in the third set at the beginning of the match," head coach Stevie Mussie said. "We clearly passed much better and set better, which is crucial in Pac-12 play. We are still looking for someone who can step up and get the timely sideout. We know we need to do that earlier so we don't have to come back from such heavy deficits early on in sets."
Sophomore Lexi MacLean and freshman Ivana Jeremic led the Sun Devils with 10 kills apiece, while sophomore Jasmine Koonts hit .350 on the night with nine kills.
"We liked what we saw out of Jasmine Koonts tonight," Mussie said. "She's really taken ownership of her new role, and nine kills on .350 hitting with three blocks is exactly what we want to see from her."
Junior Oluoma Okaro led ASU at the net with six blocks, while Koonts added three.
Freshman Nicole Peterson earned the first start of her career at setter, and she finished the night with 20 assists, six digs, and one service ace, all career highs.
Junior Halle Harker posted 16 digs on the night, bringing her career total to 1,192, 13th all-time at ASU. She is two digs away from Kelly Plaisted's (1987-90) No. 12 mark of 1,194, and 29 from tying for No. 10 all-time (Nancy Christian, 1990-93, 1,221 digs).
Khalia Lanier led the Trojans with a double-double with 22 kills and 11 digs, while Alyse Ford and Niki Withers added 12 kills each on .435 and .474 attacking, respectively.
Up next, the Sun Devils remain in Los Angeles to take on No. 18 UCLA on Friday at 7 p.m. PT. The match will air on the Pac-12 Network with Anne Marie Anderson and Holly McPeak on the call.
